The paper was written by researchers in cooperation with Germandrones and based on experimental flights with the Songbird. A set of flights was deliberately conducted with slightly damaged propeller blades. The research then focused on detecting this fault through IMU data which show the resulting vibrations as low amplitude, high frequency periodic accelerations. The aim of the study is to understand how this, and other failures can be detected before they become critical. In fact, the implementation of a similar technique has already started: Germandrones works together with the Lufthansa SafeDrone Health project providing the “UAV Monitoring and Diagnostics” service.
