"SkyCab" is testing the joint operation of manned and unmanned aircraft. For this purpose, procedures have been developed with the Deutsche Flugsicherung Aviation Services (airtraffic control), the Mönchengladbach airport company, Droniq and Germandrones. Various aspects of a future flying taxi are being examined in the project funded by the BMVI (Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure).

On August 2nd the first flight took place, during which the VTOL UAV received clearance from the tower controllers for take-off and landing at Mönchengladbach Airport and for the control zone south of the airport. The manned air traffic did not have to be interrupted for this. Despite the onset of rain and winds picking up, safe operation within the specifications of the drone was possible.

Longer routes will follow in the near future.

The aim of the project is to extensively research the potential of unmanned aviation systems - up to and including air taxis - with regard to airspace integration, safety conditions and legally relevant framework. Germandrones participates in the design of the corresponding operating procedures and provides one of their Songbirds as well as pilots.

Many thanks to MGL Airport, DAS and Droniq.
